Handing in the PhD thesis was most peculiar. I wandered around town for several hours feeling completely directionless and as light as air.
No-one who hasn't done this themselves will ever know what it feels like.
Amen to that!
And WHOO, CONGRATS for you! =)

Panic and exhaustion and hatred and horror and euphoria and being six months, a quarter of a BA and 10 000 words lighter.
No, you're right. It's indescribable. But THIS FEELING is why I want to stay in academia.

if the lack of sleep doesn't kill me first...
totally off-topic, but... NUMFAR!!!
That icon just totally made my day.

Toast to the Helen!
Knew you could do it.
Knew you could do it.
Congratulations honey :)
(I'm also really glad that the downing internet-outage doesn't seem to have affected you pre-diss-finishing!)

YAY! Well done for doing that to yourself and emerging almost alive at the other end...
oh it was wonderful! It meant that between 10pm last night and 5.30am this morning I had no distractions, I could just work and smoke and drink coffee. That internet outage saved my LIFE.
Are you in Cam? After I've handed it in, do you want to laze on the paddock and drink wine?

THANKYOU! GO ME! :D :D
two hours' sleep! on top of an average of 5 a night over the last week. I'm strangely energised. I feel very strange.

*grin* Congratulations. It's a great feeling.
I'm feeling pretty thrilled. Well, thrilled and traumatised. And at the same time, a complete absense of anything.
likewise! We'll definitely have to bump into each other again next time you're in Cam. You're fab :)

Yes - it's a sort of sublimation of feeling. An immense, sudden rush of everything dissipating, simultaneous with fear and pride and excitement and relief...
Peculiar. Very.
Peculiar. Very.
YAY! Congrats for me!
What is Numfar?

Toast! *squees with you*
The scary thing is I knew I could do it to. I should stop taking these risks; every time I somehow pull it off despite everything, it just reinforces my attitude, and one of these days it's going to fail me. But. Not yet. :)

It is indeed :)
btw, did you get my email about possibly borrowing a dress? I won't mind too much if the answer's no, but if it is I want to know so I can work out what I'm going to do instead.

Yay! Congratulations!
See you at the pub, I hope :-)

Obscure BtVS/Angel reference thing which would take a while to explain. Suffice that he's funny. =)
Yes - sorry - I'm being really crap about emails at the moment.
I'm not sure. I have three medieval dresses in Cambridge at the moment, and I'm not convinced that any of them would be suitable.
I don't want to lend you the black velvet one because it was expensive and difficult to make, and it has a long train, which makes it both hard to move in and easy to spoil.
I'd be happy to lend you the yellow one, but I think it would be too big, even if we did cunning things with safety pins.
I'm not sure about the reversible one - I'm very fond of it and would be pissed off if you spilt something on it, or stretched it - like most authentic medieval clothes it's not really washable (though it's more washable than the black one.) If you wore it red side out with something long-sleeved underneath I'd probably be OK with you borrowing it, but I think it would be too small at the chest. If your breasts are around the same size as mine (which I think they are) and you don't wear a bra, it looks OK (though not authentic.) It's too small for me though, so if you're at all bigger, it probably wouldn't work.
Do you definitely want something female? My male costumes are less authentic, therefore more washable, therefore more lendable.
I've got non-historical pantomime prince type outfit, which I'd certainly be happy to lend (black knee-breeches and an unfortunately pink top - it was dark red when I bid for it on Ebay, but unfortunately the seller tried to wash it before posting it).
Or there's my Richard III black doublet (non-authentic Early Tudor-ish).
Or silver Elizabethan boy.
Out of Cambridge there's the replica of Eowyn's refugee dress - blue long-sleeved underdress, brown overdress with side lacing, and a green early Tudor thing (I'll check - that *might* be in Cambridge). The latter is a bit small too, but since you're used to wearing corsets you'd probably be OK. But they cost a lot to post, and there's not much space in my wardrobe, so I'd rather not get anything sent up.

Whee!! Congratulations!! Coincidentally, I found out yesterday that my dissertation is now listed in the UMI database, finally convincing me (a year later) that I did finish :)
