I'm attempting to address the privacy problem through the use of ingenious homemade screens made out of bamboo canes and stretched cotton, which hopefully will cost me an afternoon and about £5 to make. I'm venturing into Leicester market tomorrow to see if I can find some cheap kingsize sheets with a vaguely aesthetically pleasing print. Ideally, of course, I would like either some Japanese paper screens or a Victorian ladies' dressing screen along the lines of this one, but alas I have neither £70 nor the means of collecting it from Shropshire.

Today I am wearing my blue scarf from Venice with the antique lace and am sipping chinese green tea. Have spent the evening mourning my lack of Cambridge friends into costume LARPing, Tolkein, Blackadder readthroughs or folk sessions. To console myself I got my father to play through a lot of our old favourites (such as Drowsy Maggie, Off to California and The Butterfly) with me on D whistle and him on mandolin, but it wasn't really the same. I am resolved to hie myself to Kings' and find myself some reformed goths with a penchant for escapism, damnit.

Hooray! Now you can hide behind the screens with Iain and make loud noises of a suspicious and naughty nature while engaged in utterly innocent activity, just to piss your roomie off!

Also, I'm in Shropshire! Had you £70, I could bring the bugger down.

yes! we are going to practice shouting suspicious obscenities to each other from opposite sides of the room while we go about our normal business. Actually it may well occur of its own accord while trying to put the buggers up - "left a bit! yes! almost! wait - nearly there - fuck yes!" - as I anticipate that thin bamboo canes won't be too easy to balance on their ends. Ne'er mind.

It's tempting. But even if I did have £70, it's only wide enough to cover about one leg if I'm lying lengthways.

How odd. I was thinking today that a Blackadder readthrough would be a Good Thing to have. If I ever get round to organising one (it must be said that there are many kinds of readthrough I consider to be Good Things to have (including 13 hour Tolkien ones)) I will ensure that you are invited.

It's another odd thing I've done with my family - like play folk music - ever since I got my hands on The Whole Damn Dynasty. Although I usually end up playing the Kate/Bobs/Amys, while my brother gets the good parts like Blackadder and Flashheart (both! pure greed!) Which is your favourite series? Mine's indisputably 2, if only because Edward is so damn fine in it.

I'm sorry for all the random comments in your journal tonight, by the way...

Definitely 2 - I love the costumes, I love Miranda Richardson (partly narcissism since I can do a mean impression of her)* and I love Stephen Fry in big gold breasts. Mind you, I have a certain soft spot for Peter Cook as Richard III too.

I can certainly do sizeable chunks. I know Bells off by heart, most of Bernard's speeches, and various scenes including most of the ones with Flash, the Babyeating Bishop of Bath and Wells speech ("I am a colossal pervert") and ... oh, lots. It's the Baldrick bits that make me come unstuck.

Now, Monty Python, however ...

I do quite a good Queenie myself, but you can be her if I can be Bernard. Stephen Fry! Did you see that random new quiz show he was in the other week - "Quite Interesting"? Are there any Italian homosexuals in the audience? My dressing room number is 618...

The absolute unbeatable moment in Blackadder history is the Jumping Jews of Jerusalem. Sheer comic genius, I tells ya. Genius!

but baldrick is easiest! just turnips and 'once there was a lovely little sausage called baldrick...' 'sausage?! sausage?!' etc. three is my favourite. i can never get enough of hugh laurie EVER EVER EVER especially as the price regent ('the prince, and the porpoise and the pauper', 'and a robber button is?' etc.)
oh my, i need to watch blackadder all weekend now. thank you for reminding me of such joy!

xx.

ah, the robber button!! I'm not a big hugh fan myself, but I'll grant that he is rather fantastic as the prince. I like the eNORmous trousers bit, and "lucky, lucky us". I think the series I know best is probably 3, because we have it on video, but I prefer 2 overall, and we DON'T have it on video. Alas!

Right, I'm going to go and look for Blackadder DVDs on amazon...

I just joined the LARP soc! Admittedly only because I get to dress up in period costume, but still. I have done the vampire stuff before and was surprised how ridiculously fun it was. Everyone here thinks I'm a goth.

I'm glad you're taking positive steps to sort out the room. Is there still no way that you could change rooms with Ruth halfway through the year? It seems seriously unfair that you should be in the walkthrough the whole time.

(sorry about panicked texting. everything good now.) xxxxx
