wishlist

I've updated my Amazon wishlist. Is posting the link really awful? I only remembered I had it when, after following a link to Martin West's translation of (and article on) the newly released Sappho poem, I ended up reading Edith Hall's review (scroll down) of Josephine Balmer's translations and poetry. Which of course I immediately coveted, and then realised that a) I had a wishlist and b) it's my 21st birthday on Tuesday. This is as much a recommendation as a request - from the sound of it, everyone else should read Balmer too. That you should read the Sappho poem, of course, goes without saying.

Well, you're making me hanker after making an Amazon wishlist, if only to keep track of Stuff I Must Read and Books I Love But Don't Have A Copy Of. Except that I don't trust Amazon not to sneakily slip wishlist items into my basket when they think I'm not looking; they've done so in the past.

Yeah - I'm absolutely convinced there are books out there that I Need and just can't think of at the moment. I'm not convinced by the argument that if I can't think of them I don't really need them.

Will be missing you on Tues, by the way. I'm sorry I didn't catch you before you left but what with going to Leicester it was all a bit frantic. Write to me, I reckon you'd be a great letter-writer. I'm horribly absent-minded at correspondence but you can always pester me via livejournal, and my letters tend to be long and rambly and occasionally illustrated. *tempttempt*

Yeah, I'm meaning to do serious letterwriting, if only so I can keep the carbon copies and have them published after my death. I'm actually a terrible letterwriter, but only because letter-writing falls into the domain of Significant Pressured Things for some reason. I'll be trying to wean myself off that.

Also, you totally need to come to Shropshire this autumn, if only because you've got two of my more-beloved books.

Yes! I do! Pick a weekend and I'll write it in, otherwise my diary'll fill up. Invisible Cities, by the way, was wonderful. I want to buy all of Amazon's used copies of it and post them to all my friends.

Not at all awful, but you've done what everyone does when trying to post a link to their wishlist - it comes up as the reader's wishlist, not yours. The way I solved the problem was signing out of Amazon, finding my own wishlist and posting *that* link.

ah! thanks for pointing it out - I've edited it.

by the way, do you need me to photocopy Cyclops for you, or have you got hold of a copy?

Could I have a photocopy please?

Sure :) I'm doing one for Marcus as well. Not sure about Yves - she hasn't got back to me.

It'll cost a couple of quid per copy, but it's probably easiest if you pay me back by bringing wine with you or something? As well as the rest of that gin, if there was any - but I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't :)

Have you discovered Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/)? They're publishing lots of free ebooks, generally as plain text or HTML (with some audiobooks too). Unfortunately they don't have Cyclops (assuming I have the correct author (http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/e#a1680)), but their collection is growing. For me, at least, printing would cost the same as photocopying (both are free, in fact).

This reminded me that I promised you, [livejournal.com profile] malcolmlambert and [livejournal.com profile] ilkley copies of my new Show of Hands CD. I have burned a couple of CDs, though I'm slightly perplexed. The CDs show each file as only taking up 44 bytes. It says the files they were burned from were not protected, but I'm wondering whether they'll work on anyone else's computer. (Needs Real Player of course). Do you know how this works? I can send that to either you or your parents (run out of blank CDs), then one can send it to the other, and/or I could send the files via Yousendit, in case the CDs don't work.

Also I don't have address/email address for your parents.
