helenic: (miles away dead of night)

I've been given a part in the CULES "A Diary of a Nobody", playing Frank, a young Victorian gent who's a bit of a cad (I said I'd quite like to cross-dress (the other part I was offered was a mischievous cockney maid - yeah right) and Jon said, "yes, that seems to be the case with most female thesps" ... !). It's quite low-profile - we're playing in old people's homes and hospitals - and the rehearsal schedule isn't exactly intensive, so hopefully if I get Dame Carruthers I should, theoretically, be able to accept that as well. After my singing lesson today, which as always left me feeling simultaneously good about myself and a bit overwhelmed by a (perhaps misplaced) sense of my own potential and exactly how little I'm doing with it, I rang up the Gilbert & Sullivan people and asked if the part was still available. It was, and I've arranged to see them later in the week. I shall sing Ruth's solo from Pirates. I doubt I'll get recalls for "Smorgasbord" or the radio play, and even if I do I'd much rather be in something that involves singing. I think I'm better suited to G&S than serious drama. I've got a good voice, and I could probably do that sort of melodramatic, tongue-in-cheek acting, whereas I have doubts whether I could do a "serious" character performance; particularly not Shakespeare or a tacky Eastenders-style rent girl.

thankyou!

argh - Augustus. SO MUCH TO SAY. No way I can answer the question in, like, less than a book and I HATE not answering the question. Oh well. I don't have to think about it after 5pm tomrrow so, enh.

sorry I was so drunk and tired last night. I wanted to dance with you! What's this about a party on Sat? xxx

The party on Saturday night is a combination Housewarming and celebration of the recent engagement announcement between Scylla and PyroJames. It should be a very fun and raucous occasion, with much opportunity for you to quaff various fortified wines.
If you want to go I'd speak up soon as we've got to sort out travel arrangements - It's a couple of miles out of Cambridge.

what time will you be leaving? I may well have a rehearsal on Saturday afternoon. I don't know when it ends, but it starts at 1.30 so I imagine I'd be free by 5 ... although having said that I might not get the part.

Of course you'll get the part, my dear, you're far too wonderful to be overlooked. I miss acting immensely, and would love to get back into it, but not being a student anymore curtails my ambitions somewhat. My Frank N Furter was legendary, and I did a pretty mean Romeo too (although perversely enough I didn't enjoy it. I was desperate to play Mercutio).
AS for the party, I think you misunderstand me. 5 o'clock? We won;t be leaving until about 9 or 10! This looks like it's going to be a, in the parlance of Michael Jackson a 'Mutha-fuckin Part-taaay' and so will not really get into the swing until late.

that's alright then. I wasn't sure whether it was an evening-party or a night-party. So yar, I shall be there. What are the travel arrangements thus far? Will anyone be leaving from the centre/going through the centre and could pick me up? Or are we talking buses? (clearly we aren't or we'd be, like, big and red with wheels and anyway buses don't talk but, erm, yeah.)

Talking buses! *hug* You're an absolute poppet. I'm not entire sure as to travel arrangements, It'll most likely be a car situation, I have to speak to people about that. I imagine a pickup in town will be possible though. Failing that I'll get a taxi to come and get you if I'm leaving from here.

Don't worry - work makes a mockery of us all at times.

argh - Augustus. SO MUCH TO SAY.

I know. He's great. But not suitable for writing anything but the most targetted essay on.

Re. party - considering the state I've woken up in this morning, I'm wondering if being somewhere near booze is a good idea, or whether it's worth coming and giggling, or indeed if I know James & Sarah well enough... eek!

due to Doom last night I ended up having to get up at 7 to spend two hours finishing it. Ended up being really crap, I got seven books out of the library and in the end used one of them and an internet article which I copied large chunks of out of sheer desperation and I included loads of unnecessary material. Bugger. I really cannot get my head around how to construct a history essay. How much of the "argument" is narrative and how much is analysis? gah!

please do come on Saturday ... I'm not sure if I will yet but if we go it should be together, yar? xx

I hope so :) If I get into the G & S, would you want to come and see it? I don't think I'm going to let anyone whose respect I want to hang onto see me as Frank, though ...

I got your letter!!! Will reply soon. Would like to do it now but have essay. You're infinitely lovely. xxxxxxxx

I can't believe the H will be being a Thesp! Ahaha! I hoped you'll let me come and see something. No Dream recall list up yet... Grrrrrrr.

Clearly for me this evening the Only Cure Was Wine. No tickets for WGW on Ebay... I'm writing an email this minute and when I hear back will let you know - I'd like to ring up and book asap...

(Oh, and Feb WH is going to be Valentine themed *imagines the joint-tarting opportunities...*) xxxx

I know, it's Sick and Wrong. I just spelt that Wong. I've had the shittest evening in the history of ever and I'm really really annoyed I have to choose between Wendyhouse and Peter Pan and I wish I had money cause then I could go to both. Damn trains to leeds being so expensive.

Is Peter Pan definitely going to be the 21st, then? Hmmm. I'm going to get a one-day-a-week job here, I think.

It's not sick and wrong at all. I'm excited you're doing new things and very pleased for you.

Why has your evening been shitty? I'll come on MSN for a quick chat if you like.

no, don't, I don't really want to talk about it. I'm going to bed in a minute. Just essay stress combined with huge hideous fight with Iain involving him being angrier with me than he's ever been (literally) and me just hysterically crying for two hours. Horrible. We're okay now. He's just left. God, I'm so tired, and I still haven't finished this essay...

Shit. Ominous. Are you sure you don't want to talk? I still have numerous free minutes. Maybe going to bed is the best idea, but tell me about it all soon.

lots of hugs.

really? I don't know anything about the play, although the bits I had to read for audition weren't exactly, erm, side-splitting. How do you reckon Frank should be played? I'm not sure whether to try and be a convincing male or make the whole cross-dressing thing add to the humour, and the directors seem a bit undecided too.

bother

i think you should use the cross-dressing to your advantage, it'll make him funnier. i haven't read it as a play though y'see, only the diary format book. but i imagine it would be the same. and it is funny! side-splittingly so and everything. promise... read it through by yourself and i guarantee you'll chuckle.

Oh great, I'm glad the timing worked out so well! I hope today continues to be good for you.

Good luck Break a leg in your G&S audition!
