helenic: (hobbitness!! (by kungfuchaos))
[personal profile] helenic
The unfortunate consequences of my and [livejournal.com profile] _aredhel's decision to see Return of the King in costume; we made a humourous, if strangely feminine, Merry and Pippin, complete with matching Lord of the Rings boxer shorts (which aren't included in the photos, I'm afraid). We didn't manage to get any pictures at the cinema but these were taken afterwards, along with pipeweed and much mirth ...

pippin: 'look! braces!' merry: 'eh up, I've grown moobs'

what's he got in his pocketses, brandybuck?   hai ham an 'obbit of distinction!   Merry stifles a smirk.

alas! 'tis the lovechild of merry and withnail.   the finest weed in the Southfarthing!

Pippin and his 'precious'.   warning: use of pipeweed may cause extreme silliness

fool of a Took!   are hobbits supposed to be this cute?

(These were taken by [livejournal.com profile] _aredhel and me, and very kindly cropped and things by [livejournal.com profile] kungfuchaos, because my computer is still broken and my father's has no image editing software. [livejournal.com profile] kungfuchaos is also to blame for the icon; I claim no responsibility whatsoever ... !)

it's annoying, the boxer shorts were my favourite part, and you don't get to see them ... mind you, there are words for people who pictures of that nature on a public forum :)

tch! easy!

so theres some weird thing going on with the text in that icon. it reads "pipeweed" clearly enough when you look at it, but if you just glance at it it looks like a different word every time. some so far: "pervert" "pervweed" "penguin" and "present". whats up with that. think i went a little over the top with the dots and stuff :-S

ah, never take anything seriously if it's followed by a :) ... no seriously, I wasn't actually referring to you. Ne're mind. I have to say I don't get the pipeweed thing, although pervweed is an amazing word. Maybe you still have some in your bloodstream from last night ...

new ones: "pi reward" "piqued"

i don't know what you're talking about :-S however, i did eat a lot of bananas that night. some might say i fell out of the banana tree and ate every banana on the way down. then fell down the banana cliff into the banana sea and totally drank it.

*mental image of raccoon falling down cliff in cascade of bananas* man, how did you have time to unpeel them all?! mmmm banananana sea. mm. did you get to "nanny ogg's bananananana surprise" in discworld? hehe.

I just made a smoothie with grapefruit and 2 bananas and cinnamon. I love what happens when you put bananas in a blender and the drink goes all frothy and thick and opaque. Did I tell you I got a blender for christmas to take to uni? a proper one? that'll beat malcolm's electric whisk any day. hee. oh my god, imagine if you actually put banana bananas into a smoothie. mmmm. better than brownies any day.

Maybe when I go see it, I should dress as Gandalf. Or maybe not...

I suppose you could modify a santa beard ... but you wouldn't have an amazing staff that shot bolts of PURE POWER at Saur ... Oh, I'm sorry, did you say you hadn't seen it yet? I won't spoil it for you then :)

Nope. Not seen it yet. Nor have I even yet seen The Two Towers. But I have shiny Extended DVDs of TTT (and FOTR), so shall watch that and then venture forth into the cinema for the finale...

now you see, I don't understand people who do this. Because surely by the time you've watched 8 hours of lord of the rings at home the LAST thing you'll be in the mood for will be another 3 hours in the cinema? and that's assuming you skip the appendices, which I think are an essential part of the extended edition. If I were you I'd do one extended edition a day, including appendices, and then see return of the king on the third day. That way you get the appendices to each film as you go along, so they'll make much more sense, and you don't get so much butt ache.

you will LOVE the extended TTT though. Not watching the cinema version was a good plan if you have the patience (I didn't) - the shorter version was frankly pretty crap, but it all works a lot better without the bits that were cut. Okay. </geek> now.

Oh, no, I shan't watch them all at once or anything. Too much of a good thing and all that. I've watched Extended FOTR already (not managed appendices yet; I may save those til later), and some time during the week when there's a clear 3 1/4 hours it'll be Extended TTT. Then I'll leave it a few days before seeing ROTK in the cinema. At least that's the plan...

Very cute ;) Glad you enjoyed the movie - but I get the feeling that you would have done anyway, dressed up like that!

oh, it was fantastic fun. We had multicoloured fizzy slushies and everything. Although we didn't get popcorn thrown at us for being such geeks, which was something of a disappointment ...

Don't mind me - random stranger who thinks this is awesome. You didn't go as girly elves in fairy clothes! YAY! And you both look so cute as hobbits...if only you had big, hairy feet.

on 2003-12-30 01:59 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] libellum.livejournal.com
actually I'm quite glad I don't have big hairy feet. But I'm glad you approve :)

Did you like the film?

Yeah, I did. There were some beautiful scenes. My boyfriend moaned about how long and drawnout the ending was, but I was happily sobbing through it because I'm a sap like that...:-)

I was in tears for most of it. Particularly the scene with the lighting of the beacons, and the charge of faramir's company intercut with pippin's song, and the last charge of rohan, and when gandalf is talking to pippin about death ... it was all so moving and breathtaking and beautiful. Although I agree that the ending was drawn out. I'm glad they included all the material they did because the Grey Havens chapter is, in my opinion, one of the finest and most poignant pieces of writing in english literature, but for me the true sorrow of it is the leaving of the elves, and the fact that the age of elves is over and it is all ending. Whereas that was barely touched upon, and in the film the tragedy was the parting of sam and frodo - and the hugs and crying did go on for far too long. I was getting a little bored, to be honest. One of the reasons that chapter is so profound is that it is so understated, and quiet, and short. The film ruined that effect by making it so emotional and dragging it out so much.

That said, I think that's the ONLY criticism I have to make. Other than that it was wonderful.

I totally agree with that ending of the age of elves sentiment - I was trying to explain that to someone who hadn't read the books and they just didn't get it. I think Peter Jackson could have done much better on that...

And it's funny - those scenes you mentioned were exactly the ones that made me cry...hehe...among others, of course. I loved both Pippin's song and Aragorn's song. Beautiful.
