I have decided, probably far too late, and mostly because of the events last week, that I'd really really like to go to Chris and Ashfae's wedding even though it'll mean missing a choir concert. If it's possible, that is, given my lack of money. I therefore have a couple of questions:

1. [livejournal.com profile] borusa and [livejournal.com profile] taimatsu, are you still able to offer me car space, and if so, when will I need to be in Reading by?
2. [livejournal.com profile] randomchris, given that I'm poor, do you have any advice about where I can stay in Edinburgh? I'm afraid I'm not entirely sure what's been going on. I could afford a youth hostel but possibly not a B&B. Alternately, is anyone likely to have a floor or a sofa I could sleep on? I'm not fussy and don't take up much room and could buy you, oh, I don't know, whisky or something, because even nice single malt is cheaper than a hotel for two nights.
3. Does anyone else know anything that I should know?

Edit: I've booked a bed at the High Street Hostel, which is just around the corner from Royal Mile Backpackers where lots of other people are staying. So if anyone hasn't booked a bed yet, come and stay there as well, I'd like the company! You probably need to ring them today though as they're almost full: the number is 0131 557 3984, and it's £12 a night.

1) Yes, there is still space. Thus far, there is a [livejournal.com profile] taimatsu and me in it the car.
2) The difference between Reading-Edinburgh and Reading-Cambridge-Edinburgh is only 20 miles. Thusly, if you did want a lift, we could pick you up.

Rearrange point (1) to be in English.

I hadn't even noticed because I skimmed it, but I now cannot stop giggling. In it the car! The Romans they go the 'ouse! *cracks up*

... okay, obviously a part of my brain is still high.

ahhhhhh! I was hoping this might be the case, but it seemed rude to ask. That would be exceptionally convenient and would also mean I could give you petrol money since you'd be saving me a train ticket. Rah. Also apparently [livejournal.com profile] atreic is staying in a youth hostel. This is looking almost possible :)

What times/dates are you travelling?

I haven't talked about this with [livejournal.com profile] taimatsu yet, but ideally we'd be going up on the Friday during the day, and coming back on the Sunday ditto. It's quite a long drive, and I'd rather do it in daylight.

Also, I need to talk to my accomodation person to check that staying two nights is OK.

Sure.

I have a supervision that finishes at 1pm on the Friday, so if you were hoping to be in Cambridge by the morning, I probably wouldn't be able to do it.

Posted by [identity profile] borusa.livejournal.com
Leaving Cambridge at 1 would put us in to E at 7:30ish.

To be honest, it's unlikely that we'd be able to get moving much earlier than that - and it's a two hour drive from Reading to Cambridge. I wouldn't have thought your supervision would be a problem.

that's what I was assuming :)

are you two planning on going to the curry thing on the Friday?

on 2005-03-03 05:41 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] borusa.livejournal.com
Curry is a bit of an issue for [livejournal.com profile] taimatsu. I'll talk to her about it.

Okay. I'm almost definitely going, I think, if I can find out how to get there.

As I recall, they have European options (the usual "chicken and chips" kind of thing). Although if it's the smell of curry that she can't stand, then that would be a problem.

Theoretically, would there be room for a fourth person? I say theoretically, because I told [livejournal.com profile] atreic I'd go with her (I'm assuming there definitely wouldn't be room for two more people...)

on 2005-03-03 05:21 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] borusa.livejournal.com
Theoretically yes. You would make it 4 people.

Five people in the car for that long is likely to be uncomfortable, though it's not impossible (given the relative dimensions of you, [livejournal.com profile] atreic and [livejournal.com profile] libellum). I'd rather not do it, but if people needed me to it is not entirely unfeasible.

Assuming nobody brings more than a rucksack each, obviously.

How long would the journey take?

Posted by [identity profile] borusa.livejournal.com
The AA say about 6:30. That sounds about right. Obviously, we can stop quite a bit, but it's still going to be quite a long drive.

OK, [livejournal.com profile] atreic has decided she needs a rest that weekend after all, so could I definitely say yes to a lift, please?

on 2005-03-03 06:15 pm (UTC)
Posted by [identity profile] borusa.livejournal.com
Yep. I'll confirm what I have planned with [livejournal.com profile] taimatsu, but pending that, everything is hunky dory.

Now to find 16 hours worth of CDs for the journeys.

Ooh, fab!

Yes, the youth hostel probably still has space. Many people are staying at Royal Mile Backpackers ([livejournal.com profile] atreic, [livejournal.com profile] leonato, [livejournal.com profile] fyrie, [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve, possibly [livejournal.com profile] yvesilena and a few other randoms) - their phone number is 0131 557 6120, and they're £12 a night (though it is large shared dorms).

There are also general plans for a meal out on the Friday night if you're going to arrive before 8pm - this would be at King's Balti, which is reasonably central, and has student curry prices. Email me if you'd like to come to that.

I just rang Royal Mile Backpackers and they're booked up both nights, so I've booked a room at the High Street Hostel which is apparently just across the road. Yay! I'd like to come to curry on the Friday as well, please :)

Chris - are you going to be sending us information about where we're staying? I'd like to be able to ring them in advance and ask whether they're going to be able to give me breakfast or whether I need to bring stuff myself (most of the normal breakfasts I can think of contain dead animals, gluten or both).

I'd also like to know about when we can arrive by and leave our things etc. (Unless this is something Everyone Knows except for weirdos like me who never go on holiday.)

(Unless this is something Everyone Knows except for weirdos like me who never go on holiday.)

It usually does vary at least a little from place-to-place, and yes, if Chris is reading this: I too would welcome much information. An address and postcode for the place and Yves' youth hostel so that I can find them on multimap.com and won't spend ages trying to direct Nick around Edinburgh when we're knackered on Friday evening would also be lovely...

well, assuming Yves is staying at the Royal Mile Backpackers (she hadn't booked a place when I spoke to her on Saturday, but perhaps she has since then) then the details are on their website, which I've linked to in my post.

Sure things *resends earlier email* All details are in that.

Yves' hostel (probably, I don't know if she's booked it yet) is on the Royal Mile, postcode EH1 1SG.

if she hasn't booked it yet, she won't be able to now; they wouldn't take a booking from me yesterday.

Hi Chris,

Did you send an e-mail about this? I know that it's the Shalimar and I'm assuming that it's this one: http://www.edinburgh.org/database/acc/edd00291.htm, but you never did send anything with their phone number or address in it.

Or at least, not to an address that I have. :-)

*hugs*

Elly

Oooh, Edinburgh! Are you going to have any time for a wander around? If so, I must give you some lovely places to go for coffee and things. I think I even know of the place you're staying...

well, we're going out for curry on the Friday night, I think, but the wedding itself isn't until 4.30 on the Saturday, followed by reception and ceilidg. I imagine we'll be leaving early-ish on Sunday but I'll have some time on Saturday. Recommend me places, by all means!

Reading this has reminded me that I need to work out how to get to Auld Reekie too.

That is a none to subtle plea to [livejournal.com profile] evil_nick and [livejournal.com profile] mirabehn of course. Can Pippin handle an extra person? I would be handy for directing people round Edinburgh (please....)

If not i'll jump on a train. They're fairly frequent.

Haven't had much time to think about the wedding, with my viva being on Monday (AARGH!). I planning a post-viva meal in Cambridge... must remember to post later.

you may want to email them - I'm not sure if they'll see this.

oooh, post-viva meal? *ears perk up* I'm free on Monday...

good luck for it anyway, I'm sure you'll RAWK.

Alas, we already have a carful. [livejournal.com profile] angelislington and [livejournal.com profile] yvesilena, plus much stuff. We're already going to have to put lots of baggage on Yves' lap, I fear (though she is forewarned of this).

I hope you'll be able to find a suitable train. *hugs*

Best of luck for the viva, my dear. I know you'll be fantastic. :) :) :)
